Cruising is a 100 billion dollar industry, and the fastest growing sector in travel. Ships are getting bigger and bolder and are heading to more exotic ports of call all over the globe. Over 23 million passengers are projected to take a cruise in 2015, and the majority will be pleased with their experience. However, there is an underbelly of the industry that you won’t find highlighted on the glossy brochures or promotional websites. Not to dissuade you from ever setting sail, but consumers should be aware of some of the issues, concerns and quirks of cruising before deciding if that’s the kind of vacation they want to sign up for. Avid cruisers are a passionate bunch, and we certainly hear it in our comments whenever we dare to bring up negative aspects of the industry. We’re not anti-cruise, per se, and we welcome your opinions, counter-arguments and feedback. We just want to help you make an informed decision or avoid some potential snafus should you chose to embark on a vacation at sea. রাগে কাঁদলেন ঐশ্বরিয়া!

বলিউড তারকা ও সাবেক বিশ্বসুন্দরী ঐশ্বরিয়া রাই বচ্চন ঠান্ডা মাথার মানুষ। তা ছাড়া ১৯৯৪ সালে ‘মিস ওয়ার্ল্ড’ প্রতিযোগিতার প্রশিক্ষণের কল্যাণেই বুঝি মুখে সব সময় এক চিলতে হাসি ধরে রাখার অভ্যাস ভালোই রপ্ত হয়েছে তাঁর। ‘গণমাধ্যমবান্ধব’ এই নায়িকা যদি হুট করে সংবাদমাধ্যমের কর্মীদের ওপর খেপে যান, তাহলে বুঝতে হবে কোথাও কোনো ঘাপলা আছে। আজ মঙ্গলবার একটি দাতব্য প্রতিষ্ঠানের অনুষ্ঠানে গিয়ে আলোকচিত্রী আর সাংবাদিকদের ওপর ভীষণ চটেছেন ঐশ্বরিয়া রাই বচ্চন। এমনকি একপর্যায়ে তিনি নিজেকে নিয়ন্ত্রণ করতে না পেরে কেঁদে ফেলেন। ঐশ্বরিয়া তাঁর প্রয়াত বাবা কৃষ্ণরাজ রাইয়ের জন্মদিনে অসাধারণ উদ্যোগ নিয়েছেন। তিনি ‘স্মাইল ট্রেন ইন্ডিয়া’ নামে এক সংগঠনের সমন্বয়ে ১০০ শিশুর চিকিৎসার দায়িত্ব নিয়েছেন। আজ সকালে ঐশ্বরিয়া তাঁর মা বৃন্দা রাই আর মেয়ে আরাধ্য বচ্চনকে সঙ্গে নিয়ে সেই সংগঠনের শিশুদের সঙ্গে কিছু সময় কাটান। কেক কাটার সময় ঐশ্বরিয়া রাই ও আরাধ্যর ছবি তোলার জন্য সংবাদমাধ্যমের কয়েকজন আলোকচিত্রী চিৎকার করেন। এতে আরাধ্যসহ অন্য শিশুরা ভয় পেয়ে যায়। ঐশ্বরিয়া তাঁদের চিৎকার না করার জন্য কয়েকবার অনুরোধ করেন। কিন্তু কে শোনে কার কথা? ...

Some Bali flights resume after volcano eruption

Some international airlines have resumed flights to Bali on Sunday after the Indonesian island’s Mount Agung volcano erupted for the second time in less than a week on Saturday evening. Carriers said they were assessing the situation on Sunday morning with several airlines including Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin resuming flights, which were disrupted after the volcano sent a grey-black plume of ash and steam at least 1,500 meters (4,920 ft) into the sky. Flights affected also included those operated by KLM and AirAsia. Routes to Bali from several cities in Australia, the Netherlands and Malaysia were canceled and re-routed on Saturday night and early Sunday morning as a result of the eruption. Jetstar said its pilots had determined the improved conditions in Bali to be safe for flying. “Most scheduled flights to and from Bali today will operate,” Jetstar said in a release on its website.
